How we think about horses

We'd rather have a horse that thinks than one that just moves.

Saline River Farms is a horse outfit first, run out of Monticello about 120 miles south of Little Rock. We keep the program small on purpose. Our horses come up around cattle on the river bottom and get handled young, so the country they live in, gates, water, brush, and stock, is the country they're broke to.

We start them with patience, not shortcuts, and we sell them described honestly, matched to the job, and backed by the person who raised them.

The remuda

What we ride.

01.

Bred with intention

Every mating is a decision, not an accident. We breed for disposition, structure, and soundness of mind, the traits that make a horse worth keeping for the long haul, and we can tell you exactly what's behind each foal.

02.

Raised to work

Grown out on the place, halter-broke and handled young, then started slow and honest with the miles put on where it counts. The willing, level-headed sort you can trust to sort a pen, drag a calf, or carry a kid down the road.

03.

Matched to the rider

A good horse in the wrong hands helps nobody. Tell us the job and the rider, and we'll tell you straight whether one of ours fits, or whether you ought to wait for the right one.

How we do it

Principles.

01.

Honest representation

A horse is described the way it is, quirks and all. If there's something you ought to know before you load it, you hear it from us first.

02.

Started with patience

No shortcuts and no forcing. A horse brought along slow stays sound in the mind, and that's what lasts.

03.

A sound mind first

Pretty is fine, but we breed and select for disposition. We'd rather sell you a plain horse that thinks than a flashy one that doesn't.

04.

We stand behind it

We're a small outfit and our name is on every horse that leaves. That's the whole reason we keep the numbers where we can do right by them.
